A useful tool when editing Doom 3 content. As such, Doom is widely known as one of the most important video games of all time for having popularized the first-person shooter genre, pioneering immersive 3D graphics, networked multiplayer gaming, and support for customized additions and modifications via packaged files in a data archive known as 'WADs'.

DOOM is a big game. This is true mostly because it's a reboot of the extremely popular, and historic franchise, but it is also true in the literal sense. Today Bethesda revealed the launch trailer for the game, along with some important info about the actual release. This includes the PC system specs required to play DOOM, as well as the unlock times for those who purchase the game digitally. More importantly though, it reveals the DOOM file size, which is pretty hefty no matter what platform you play on.

On PC, DOOM will require 55GB of free hard drive space in order to be able to install and run the game. Of course, most PC gamers have a pretty massive hard drive, so that amount of space isn't too difficult to come by, though you'll likely avoid popping it onto your SSD, opting for the traditional HDD instead.

↑ 1.0 1.1 File/folder structure within this directory reflects the path(s) listed for Windows and/or Steam game data (use Wine regedit to access Windows registry paths). Games with Steam Cloud support may store data in /.steam/steam/userdata/ / 379720 / in addition to or instead of this directory. So I heard a lot of people suffered from lost data and I'm hoping to mitigate that issue by performing a backup, but I can't find that folder.

On consoles this number is only slightly smaller, with Bethesda warning that PS4 and Xbox One players require 50GB of available hard drive space just to install the game. Sometimes this doesn't totally correlate to the amount of space the game takes up, as it downloads more for the install process. Still, it is a tall order for those who have already filled up their hard drives with other games. Going in and deleting some might even be necessary for many players, as the 500GB models of both the PS4 and Xbox One would need a full 10% of their space available for just this one game.

There are other options, such as expanding or adding an external hard drive for your console. These obviously aren't ideal though, so maybe just go in and delete some old PS Plus or Xbox Live Games with Gold titles that you know you'll never get around to playing.

DOOM hits PS4, Xbox One, and PC on May 13th.
